Udaipur, the City of Lakes in southern Rajasthan, and the Mewar region around it have been home to fine handicrafts for centuries — miniature painting, pichwai art, marble carving, silver jewellery and hand-made wooden furniture. One of the most striking is bone inlay, and Udaipur is one of India's best-known centres for it.
AlvoraCrafts makes bone inlay furniture and décor in its own workshop in Udaipur — beds, almiras, chests, chairs, tables and mirrors — every piece made to order, by hand.
What is bone inlay?
Bone inlay is a decorative technique in which small pieces of bone are hand-cut, shaped and set into a wooden frame one by one to form a pattern — flowers and vines, stars, stripes or geometric designs. The spaces between the pieces are filled with coloured resin, and the whole surface is sanded smooth and polished. The finished surface looks almost embroidered, and with simple care it lasts for generations.
How a piece is made in our workshop
Building the frame
Each piece starts as a sturdy wooden frame, built to the size you need. The pattern is then drawn on to it by hand.
Cutting the bone
Our karigars cut and file every small piece of bone by hand to fit the design.
Setting the inlay
The pieces are fixed into place one at a time, following the drawn pattern.
Filling with colour
Coloured resin fills the gaps between the pieces to make the background — black, blue, grey, green or a colour you choose.
Finishing
The surface is sanded perfectly smooth, polished, and checked by hand before the piece is packed.

Caring for bone inlay
Clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, avoid harsh chemicals and soaking, and keep it out of long spells of direct sunlight so the resin keeps its colour. Looked after this way, bone inlay lasts for generations.
